Dear Friend,
Do you own a Bichon Friese? Are you thinking of getting a Bichon Friese? If you said yes to either of these questions then this message is for you.
You see, this is not some “generic” dog training information. This is written ONLY for Bichon Friese owners.
You’ll learn things about Bichon Friese training most dog trainers don’t even know.
Here’s why.
My mother, Helen Davis bred and raised Bichon Frieses in southwestern Ohio for 23 years. he practically introduced the breed to this region of the country, and is responsible directly, or indirectly, for most of the Bichons in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
he absolutely adored these dogs. he often said to me, (sometimes with tears in her eyes), “You don’t understand. These are more than just dogs”.
And, he was right. I didn’t understand. Until I started breeding them myself.
My mother , 2 sisters and I have a combined 56 years of experience breeding and training Bichon Friese.
In 1993 I lost my job of 20 years due to “downsizing”. My mother convinced me that breeding Bichons would be a way to pick up some of the financial “slack”. And be fun as well. So, he gave me “Buttons” one of her best females, and provided stud service and I was on my way.

Hi Janet, Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks. Megan is now 5 months old, and thanks to the tips you gave me he’s been an absolute joy. My friends and family just love her.
Lisa Miller, Hamilton, Ohio
PS. You’re right. That “secret weapon” is a life saver.

|
Out of her second litter I picked out “Belle” to keep for myself and gave Buttons back to my mother where he could retire in the familiar surroundings of the farm where he’d been raised.
I don’t know if was just “dumb luck”, or divine intervention, but Belle turned out to be a very special dog. he is much more than a pet . he is my friend. It was with the help of Belle, and my mother that I learned what amazing dogs Bichon Frieses truly are.
Bichon Frieses are very intelligent dogs. For instance Belle was the only dog I’ve ever seen that learned by watching, as opposed to being taught everything. Our Border Collie had terrible hay fever. So he sneezed a lot. He sneezed on several occasions while I was giving him and Belle a treat. Soon after, whenever Belle wanted a treat he would walk up to me and sneeze.
This kind of intelligence can be very positive, but it has its drawbacks as well.
An intelligent dog can be easier to train, but it can also make the dog very “headstrong”
Bichons can be manipulative and stubborn so you need to start your Bichon Friese training immediately.
Be consistent in their discipline and let them know you mean what you say.

From Belle’s third litter we kept Annie. Belle was so easily trained I was caught a little off guard by Annie. Annie was a more typical Bichon. Many bichons can be difficult, and that was Annie. he was timid, and stubborn which made her tough to train.
Annie would;
- · Bark at every little noise he heard,
- · Go crazy whenever somebody came to door and jump all over them.
I know he thought he was just being friendly, but it was very annoying!
- · Chew on my fingers
- · Chew on the furniture.
- · And (yuck!) he was eating poop!
But, by using some of the tricks, and techniques I’d learned from my mother, and from having raised three litters of pups I was able to avoid the problems many Bichon Friese owners have and break Annie of all of her bad habits.
|
Janet, I wasn’t sure if a Bichon Friese was right for me. But, after reading your book I decided to get one. Thanks to your advice I was able to find a great breeder and got the “pick of the litter”. When I take him for walks my neighbors always comment on what a beautiful dog he is.
Thanks a bunch, Sandy Cavender, Akron, Ohio

Well, then came Walker. Our little male. We came to call him “Wild Man” Walker. Full of “spit and vinegar” Walker was a handful. Energetic, and curious to a fault it took everything I knew, and then some, to get him under control.
He was about 6 months old when we got him, and had had very little training. Now he is my husbands best friend, following him everywhere he goes, obeying his every command.
With over 13 years of personal experience I’ve solved just about every problem a Bichon Friese owner can have.
Now I want to help you have the best experience possible with your Bichon.

If you choose to do the grooming yourself I take you through it step-by-step. I even include a simple recipe for shampoo you can make at home.

I know you still have a lot of questions But, don’t worry I’ve tried to answer them all.
There are so many places to register my Bichon. AKC, CKC, etc. Which should I use?
How can I avoid the knee problems I’ve heard Bichons have?
A friend of mine lost her Bichon due to kidney problems. Is this common?
Are Bichons good with children? I have a 7 year old.
Why does my Bichon “snort” and choke after drinking water? How I can stop it?
